Fine Wine Price-Checker
Thank you for using our free Price-Checker service. You can use this facility to ensure that the price of a wine you're considering buying is fair, or to value your current holdings*
Please enter the name of the wine and the relevant vintage into the fields below. You can find the most commonly searched for wines in the drop-down box below, or you can type the name of the wine in directly (please enter the name of the wine as fully as you can - i.e. enter Mouton Rothschild rather than just Mouton - to ensure accurate results)
What am I seeing?
You are being shown the current average price in the market for the wine(s) you have selected, in standard 75cl bottles in Bond (excluding local taxes and duty)
How does it work?
Price-Checker searches within Wine-Searcher's database of 4m+ wine price offers for matches and calculates the average price in the market at any given moment.
How accurate is it?
The data used to calculate the average is from a broad base of merchants and brokers (nearly 20,000 post their offers with Wine-Searcher) so the figure you see should give you a reasonable, fair market price for the wine.
I've been quoted a higher figure. How much is acceptable?
Price-Checker is only intended as a guide, so you should allow for a small amount of variation in the market. However, it's pretty reliable and mindful that it’s an average (meaning that if you shopped around you’d be able to buy it for less) you really shouldn’t be paying much over the figure displayed.
Provenance and storage play a part, but NOT to the tune of the 20, 30 or even 40%+ premium that we sometimes hear of our customers being quoted! In fact, on the whole, the offers used to calculate the average will be perfectly stored OWC (original wooden case) examples of excellent provenance, as the data is drawn from the many of the biggest (and most reliable) merchants in the market and the cheapest 10% of offers are excluded.
In reality, there are very few convincing arguments to be paying a premium.
*How do I use this to value my holdings?
The average price is calculated using the various merchant's current selling prices. The individual merchants will typically offer you 10 - 20% below theirs, depending on factors like current stock levels and anticipated demand, so - unless you have a special arrangement with your merchant / broker - you need to factor this into your expectations. Offers may vary wildly, so shop around!
How are erroneous prices handled?
In order to provide the most reasonable estimate, the top and bottom 10% of prices are removed before the average is calculated. This means that the average price is not skewed by unusual problems such as bottle size errors.
Tax Handling: Average prices and price ranges are sales tax exclusive. The calculations remove sales tax from any tax-inclusive price lists
I'm not in the UK, can I still use Price-Checker?
Yes; you can change the country field to get the average price where you are. Average prices are calculated for each wine, for each vintage and for each country. So if you have selected United States, then we will show you the average price for the wine from merchants located only in the United States.
What about exchange rates?
All prices displayed are converted to the selected currency using Interbank exchange rates. These rates are updated every day.
I can't find the wine I'm looking for / the price is wildly different from what I was expecting
Please email us and we will have a look at the specifics of your search. Occasionally Price-Checker gets confused by wines with similar names
Can I see the individual offers?
You can see a selection of the offers for free on www.wine-searcher.com. To see all the offers, you will need to subscribe to Wine Searcher's Pro Version for $39.00 USD per annum. You can subscribe here
